Hello!

My name is Rae Pittenger-Jimenez (she/they); I am a midwife, full-spectrum doula, and analog film photographer living in the Pacific Northwest. With over a decade in perinatal healthcare, my work weaves together clinical care with photography and writing, creating a body of work that is both interpretive of the reproductive experience and indexical to the unseen labor of family-building and parenthood.

My creative and support practice is informed by years of clinical experience in prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, combined with my own experiences of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

Doula Approach

My doula approach grows out of my midwifery training and how I understand my role in community. Bodily autonomy, choice, equality — these aren't just values I hold, they're ones I actively advocate for in the room.

And underneath that is something older: a belief in the ancestral wisdom of shared family-building, in birth as something communities have always held together.

Being invited into someone's birth story is exactly that — an invitation. I bring my presence, my experience, and a trust in people's ability to know their own needs. My hands are there when they're wanted, offering support without ever intruding on what belongs to my client and the people they've chosen to have around them. And just as often, my job is to step back — to watch, to trust what's unfolding without my hands in it — while staying close enough to step back in the moment it's needed.

Creative Style

I believe pregnancy and birth are living art, and I doula from that place — attentive to the body's rhythms, the shifts in a room, the seemingly invisible moments. My eye as an artist shapes how I show up: noticing, interpreting, and reflecting back what is extraordinary in the unfolding of birth.

Inspired by impressionism and pictorialism, I lean toward how a moment feels, looking for the image that echoes the way memory actually lives in the body. Pregnancy and birth can often feel hazy when we look back on them; I endeavor to capture that for the art that I believe it is.

I choose analog photography (film) because it plays an active role in the creative process. Film mirrors the unpredictability of life but never lacks in a sacred sort of magic. I think of film as a tool, another tangible member of the birth process.
